What inspired us to create Tushie?

Our founders didn't just stumble into the pet industry by accident. After successfully disrupting the bottled water industry with sustainable alternatives that had actual personality (goodbye, boring eco-friendly water bottles with sad, muted colors), we couldn't help but notice the same problem plaguing pet products. Sustainable options existed, sure, but they all seemed to share the same dreary aesthetic and humorless messaging—as if going green meant giving up on fun. With cats of our own staring at us judgmentally while we scooped their environmentally questionable litter, we knew we had found our next mission. We'd already proven that sustainability could be sexy in one industry drowning in plastic; why not do the same for the pet world? And so, armed with our experience in transforming consumer expectations and a passionate hatred of boring packaging, we set out to create pet products that wouldn't make you hide them when guests came over.

How are we addressing the pet industry's sustainability problem?

Traditional clay litters contribute over 2 million tons of non-biodegradable waste to landfills annually—that's a lot of unhappy planets. Our tofu-based formula not only biodegrades naturally but is made from sustainable, renewable resources that don't require destructive mining. We've eliminated artificial fragrances (because masking odors with chemicals is so last century) and replaced them with natural odor-neutralizing compounds. But we didn't stop at just making better litter—we're building a company with sustainability at its core. From our minimal, recyclable packaging to our carbon-neutral shipping options, we're creating a blueprint for how the pet industry can evolve. And this is just the beginning—we're already developing a full line of sustainable, health-monitoring pet products that will make both pets and their humans feel good inside and out.

General Information

FAQ

  • What exactly is tofu cat litter?
Tushie Tofu Litter is made from sustainable plant-based materials, primarily soybean byproducts (similar to tofu production). Unlike traditional clay litters, our litter is 100% biodegradable, lightweight, and highly absorbent, while featuring our unique pH-indicating color change technology to help monitor your cat's health.
  • How does the PH color-changing feature work?
Our litter changes color based on the pH level of your cat's urine—orange indicates high acidity, yellow shows normal range, and green/blue signals high alkalinity. These color changes can provide early detection of potential urinary health issues, allowing you to notice changes before they become serious problems.
  • Is Tushie Tofu Litter really biodegradable?
Absolutely! Unlike clay litter that sits in landfills for eternity, Tushie breaks down naturally and can even be composted (in non-food gardens, of course). It's made from renewable resources rather than mined clay, making it dramatically better for the environment.
  • Will my cat actually use tofu litter?
Most cats transition to Tushie without any issues! The texture is similar to what cats naturally prefer, and we've designed it to be appealing to even the pickiest felines. For smoother transitions, we recommend gradually mixing Tushie with your current litter over 7-10 days.
  • How often should I change the litter?
We recommend completely changing your Tushie litter every 2-3 weeks, depending on how many cats you have. Regular scooping (1-2 times daily) will maintain freshness and ensure you can monitor your cat's health through color changes.
  • Does it really control odors without artificial fragrances?
Yes! Tushie's natural odor-neutralizing compounds actually eliminate smells rather than masking them with overpowering perfumes (which many cats hate). The tofu-based formula naturally traps and contains odors, keeping your home fresh without chemicals.
  • Is Tushie Tofu Litter dust-free?
While no litter is 100% dust-free, Tushie produces significantly less dust than clay litters. This means less tracking around your home and better respiratory health for both you and your feline friend.
  • How much litter should I use?
For optimal performance, we recommend filling your litter box with 2-3 inches (5-7.5 cm) of Tushie Tofu Litter. Our 2.5kg bag typically lasts one average sized cat about 4-6 weeks Our 4.5kg bag typically lasts one average sized cat about 6-8 weeks, depending on your scooping habits.
  • Is Tushie safe if my cat accidentally ingests some?
Tushie is made from natural, non-toxic materials that are safer than clay litters if accidentally ingested. However, as with any non-food product, we don't recommend letting your cat eat it (but we understand cats make their own rules).
  • Can I flush Tushie Tofu Litter?
Absolutely! Unlike clay litters, Tushie is completely flushable and safe for sewage systems. We actually recommend flushing as the most convenient and environmentally friendly disposal method. Simply scoop, flush, and go about your day! It's one more way Tushie makes cat parenthood easier while being kind to the planet.
  • What if my cat has sensitive paws?
Good news! Tushie's soft texture is gentler on sensitive paws compared to sharp clay litters. Many cat parents report that their senior cats or kitties with paw sensitivities actually prefer our tofu litter.
  • Can I use Tushie for multiple cats?
Absolutely! Tushie works great in multi-cat households. You may need to change the litter slightly more often, and we recommend one litter box per cat plus one extra for optimal kitty happiness.
  • What should I do if I notice an unusual color change?
If you notice consistent unusual colors (orange or green/blue) in your cat's urine spots, we recommend consulting with your veterinarian. While one-off color changes might just indicate temporary dietary changes, consistent unusual colors could signal health issues worth checking.
  • Is the packaging eco-friendly?
Absolutely! We've designed our packaging to be 100% biodegradable, using paper bags and biodegradable pouches. This continues our commitment to sustainability from the product all the way to the package it comes in, ensuring that nothing from Tushie ends up lingering in landfills.
